BSc Hons Biology (2:1)

My degree work was related to the design and manufacture of screens, space dividers and lighting structures for large modern atria. Inspiration was taken primarily from the elements, wind and water, although aspects of modern urban society also featured in the work. I recorded ideas with photography, digital video and drawing, and translated them into designs for woven and manipulated fabrics.
By importing elements of the natural environment into internal environments, I aimed to soften the stark internal environment and provide a constant source of movement, changing light and beauty.
A concern for the environment led me to design fabric for multifunctional, reusable screens. I have experimented with the combination of high-tech and sometimes recycled materials, and traditional production methods. Fabrics were selected for further development depending on their visual qualities in a variety of light sources ranging from daylight through to video projections. The appearance changed dramatically depending on the light source, allowing the client to create different effects in both day and night.
Video and still projections provided a quick, economical and environmentally friendly method of changing the surface decoration of the screens, as frequently as desired.
